Welcome to 2019! It brings me great joy to introduce (IN)VISIBLE, a theatre project that will bring ‘invisible’ illnesses to the centre spotlight. I’m going to be taking you on a journey through the creative process that I will be doing between now and the final production. You also get to meet other creative people that I will be working with on this project and their role in the creative process.
(IN)VISIBLE is inspired by an article about the eligibility of the blue badge which has already has been causing divided opinions in the public, with numerous of news articles relating to some blue badge holders and the unnecessary confrontations they have experienced.
I was left questioning why somebody felt the need to confront someone who is vulnerable and then I remembered my personal experience with the Department of Work and Pensions (DWP), how the assessor made me feel small and insecure, how the all the courage and hard work I put into making myself a useful citizen to my community had been crushed by the intimidation and patronising behaviour of the assessor.
This reflection left me with the conclusion that the lack of experience could be the the cause of such a doubtful attitude towards vulnerable people. (IN)VISIBLE aims to bring that experience of the obstacles that vulnerable people face on a regular basis. In future endeavours, I plan to work with vulnerable adults and help them dissect and adapt their experiences to creating a full length performance.
I hope this introduction is a good one and happy new year!
Dan
