Who am I?

I am a Director/Performer that studies MA Drama in the University of South Wales. I was introduced to musical theatre at a young age, my first production was the school version of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat where I played the role of Judah. After many years of contemplating the theatre, I decided to jump back in after watching a live west end production of We Will Rock You. Since then, my passion for the theatre grew as I experimented with different styles of performance and began to take further studies into performing arts.

My preferred style of directing is being able to take other group members ideas and create a scene using those ideas.  As well as this, I also organise and lead rehearsals regularly when it comes to devising projects. When it gets closer to the performance date, I have also been known to take on the role of stage management. As a performer, I love being able to use my body and the space around me to experiment with different ideas. I feel that my physicality definitely shows in my work.

What do I believe?

I look at the stage in a theatre and I see a different world. Even with the traditional “fourth wall”, I believe that when the lights go out in the auditorium and the band starts playing, the audience begin to enter this world that is disconnected from the reality that we live in, even if it is just for a couple of hours. When stepping onto the stage, I am no longer Dan, I am the character, taking their personalities, their mannerisms, their emotions and become them. When I leave the stage, I am Dan again, the character’s spirit and memories remain on that stage. This method acting style has allowed me to study a character more closely in rehearsals, giving me a better understanding of the characters motives and intentions and in doing so, gives me a better insight to their emotions for which I adopt and feel these emotions once the curtains are up.
